Kenmare’s first ever Pure Festival Friday May 25th-Sunday May 27th was a phenomenal success. Hordes of people descended upon the town on a usually quiet weekend to sample the flavours and enjoy the exciting itinerary the festival had to offer.
Former Kerry legend and current Limerick manager Mickey Ned O’Sullivan opened the festival on Friday night where the Johnny Reidy Ceili band performed a traditional Dancing at the crossroads ceremony. Mickey Ned welcomed everyone to the picturesque town and told visiting tourists that everything about Kenmare was pure and beautiful and that the festival was a reflection of this. After his warm and welcoming speech, festivities got under way with a rousing set. Troupes of local set dancers danced into the night on a specially constructed wooden platform stage. The music drew people from far and wide and a huge crowd assembled for the amazing spectacle.

On Saturday the Wellness Park in the town park was a huge success with massage, aromatherapy and thalassotherapy being offered to passers by. Tai Chi also took place in the park and many spectators joined in making it a very inclusive atmosphere. The highlight of Saturday was undoubtedly the huge ‘Cirque de Kenmare’ Parade which literally brought the entire town to a standstill for one breathtaking hour. The parade was led by the Macteo group from the world famous MACNAS and they did not disappoint. The colour, rhythm and costume of theses performers was dazzling and a delight to behold. Hundreds of free balloons were distributed to the children on the streets further increasing the vivid colours and magical atmosphere of this amazing spectacle. Local groups such as Kenmare GAA teams, Kenmare Kestrels basketball club, Internazionale Soccer Club and FSKD Martial Arts school also marched in the parade which concluded with the sounds of the excellent Millstreet Pipe Band. The town square then came alive to the beat of around 40 drums as Macteo put on a riveting display of dance on the stage.
This was followed by Rick O’Shea from 2FM who held dancing competitions for Kenmare’s very own Beat on the Street in spite of the rain which was coming down very heavily at this stage.
Later that night, Cajun band ‘Two time polka’ who were performing open air on the gig rig had a surprise visitor when the victorious Jackie Healy Rae arrived in town with a cavalcade of hundreds of supporters! This further added to the atmosphere of celebration and jubilation amongst the festival goers.

Sunday opened with a Farmers Market and during the day there were several art exhibitions with delicious food and wine on offer from local suppliers. The Guinness and Jazz Brunch in the Brook Lane hotel was a huge success also. The festival closed Sunday night with live music in many venues around the town including the fantastic Reggae band ‘Unite Tribe’ who had the entire content of P.F. McCarthy’s pub dancing to a decidedly Caribbean beat.

All in all, a hugely successful weekend which is guaranteed to see the Festival go from strength to strength. As festival Chairman Paul Walsh said ‘Our focus is now on next year and securing top acts for Pure Festival 2008’. He also praised local suppliers and business people who were so generous and supportive of the Festival ‘the Festival could not have happened without local backing so a huge thank you goes out to all who made this amazing weekend such a big success’. So put Kenmare’s Pure Festival 2008 in your diaries now, it’s going to be a big one!

KENMARE PURE FESTIVAL
MAY 25TH-27TH 2007
DON’T MISS IT!

The weekend of May 25th-27th inclusive celebrates the first ever Kenmare Pure Festival. This exciting family event will herald the beginning of the holiday season in what is essentially the quintessential Irish holiday town. Recently voted amongst the top ten places to live in the world by the readers of Conde Nast magazine the Pure Festival is a collection of all things wonderful about Kenmare and reflects the diversity and multicultural flavour of this vibrant Kerry town.

The celebrations will commence on Friday night at 9pm with a traditional Dancing at the Crossroads ceremony with a top Ceili Band and a troupe of accomplished set dancers. All are invited and participation is the name of the game so bring your dancing shoes! This will run until 10.30 when the rhythm and dance will move from the open air to Kenmare’s top indoor pub venues which will host an eclectic selection of live musicians.

Kenmare Golf Club will host a Pure Festival 3 Ball Scramble at 6pm on the Friday evening also. This is a wonderful opportunity to play golf in the midst of some of Kenmare’s most majestic scenery and is not to be missed for any golf enthusiast.

Saturday is a day for both relaxing and enjoying the lively arts and crafts scene in Kenmare. In the town square the park will be transformed into a ‘Wellness Park’ where a plethora of treatments such as massage, reiki etc. will be available in the Wellness gazebos which will operate from 12pm to 4pm. Pure stress relief and a great way to recharge the batteries for an action packed evening ahead! There will also be Tai Chi and martial arts demonstrations happening from 11am onwards by teachers from the local world renowned Martial Arts School. Around the park local artists will exhibit their colourful work lending an artistic flavour to a fun filled day and one which will surely have something to offer all the family!

At 4pm the highlight of the day will surely be the commencement of the grand parade which will be hosted by the Macteo group from the incredible world famous MACNAS group. The ‘Cirque de Kenmare’ parade will thrill kids and adults alike with its diverse array of performers and is guaranteed to bring all other activity to a hushed standstill for a fun and frenzied hour which will draw to a close to the sound of the excellent Millstreet Pipe Band. After the parade Macteo will continue performing on the Pure Festival Gig Rig and will be followed by the infamous 2FM D.J. Rick O’Shea who will get the streets of Kenmare, along with all their inhabitants, rocking to its very own Beat on the Street! He will be followed by the lively ethnic Cajun outfit Two Time Polka. Something to suit all musical tastes, without a doubt. At 10.30 pm after the kids have been put to bed exhausted but happy, local pubs will again showcase a diverse range of bands and performers until the early hours. How late you stay is up to you….

Throughout Saturday & Sunday 4 local galleries will host exhibitions of local art and will offer a culinary taste of Kenmare with food from our local specialized food companies washed down with wine from our local suppliers. There will also be a wine master class by Hugh Murray in Millcove Gallery, complimented by Lorge’s divine handmade chocolates. Saturday also hosts 2 exciting music workshops by world renowned guitarist Jeff Martin and one of Ireland’s finest percussionists Wayne Sheehy.

Sunday commences with the Farmers Market at 10am where some of the finest local produce such as organic fruit and veg, homemade breads and cakes and delicious cakes and treats can be enjoyed. You can work all this excess off with Tai Chi in the Park at 11am! Star Sailing host the Pure Festival Regatta on Sunday from 2pm to 5pm and if you would prefer something a little more laid back the Pure Festival Guinness and Oyster Jazz Brunch with ‘Jazzinatra’ at the Brook Lane Hotel at 2pm may be more up your street!

The festival draws to a reluctant close on Sunday night with several live music venues around the town.
Come and stay in Kenmare on May 25th -27th and enjoy everything the Kenmare Pure Festival has to offer all the family – food, song, dance, art, relaxation and the chance to make lifelong friends with the beautiful town itself…. Pure Kenmare!
